Business Plan

UPDATE MAY 2009:

Overview
TIA Yukon undertook 3 major projects as a direct result of the recommendations provided in the 2008 Yukon Tourism Strategeic Plan.  They were: Nodal Development and Gap Analysis for Dawson City and Whitehorse; Land Asset Identification and Analysis; Tourism Business Services Listing and Analysis.  The results of these projects were unveiled at the 2009 TIA Yukon Spring Conference hosted in Dawson City on April 30-May 2nd, 2009.

Tourism Business Services Inventory
The tourism business services inventory project was undertaken because we realized that not one complete listing existed for those people who were interested in starting or building an existing tourism business.  Feedback from our membership told us that a "one-stop-shop" would be useful; a place that listed all of the resources that are available to new and existing tourism business to help them either get started or to grow their business.  The tourism business services inventory is a complete listing of Associations, Business Services, First Nations Ventures, Sources of Funding, Information and Regulatory requirements to help point you in the right direction.  This site exists for information purposes only and will aid you in finding the right office and/or person to talk to.  Good luck!

Check out the Tourism Business Services Inventory website.

Land Asset Identification and Analysis
Yukon's Tourism industry needed to develop an understanding of land assets that currently exist for tourism business development, investment and growth.  The purpose of this project was to review existing data and develop a concise inventory of Yukon's key existing and potential tourism assets, opportunities and iconic attributes based on a specific set of criteria.  The end result of this project is a GIS model that can be used to plug in various weightings for the 10 different criteria.  Based on those values, the GIS model will produce a map highlighting those specific values.
If you are interested in using the GIS model, please contact the TIA Yukon office directly at 668-3331 or at tiayukon@klondiker.com.  We will do a needs analysis with you and connect you with the GIS model.

Nodal Development and Gap Analysis
The purpose of this project was to develop a nodal development tool kit and then actually use the toolkit to understand and analyze the gaps for Dawson City as a Yukon tourism node.  Resulting from the findings of this project were two investor-ready business cases for Dawson City.  The intention for this project is the toolkit can be used by anyone wanting to proceed with nodal development in their area.  The toolkit and identified process will uncover the gaps and help determine what is required in a specific node to make it a desirable tourism location.  To date, Dawson City has been through the Nodal Development process.  TIA Yukon plans to proceed with the Nodal Development process for Whitehorse in the 2010/11 fiscal year.

Yukon Tourism Industry Business Plan
In April 2007, TIA Yukon contracted Western Management Consultants, led by Kent Stewart, to conduct a two-phased approach for the industry-led Tourism Sector Analysis and Business Plan.  This initiative, in partnership with Economic Development and Tourism Culture, is the first time that the industry has initiated a game plan for itself in many years.

Phase 1 will conclude findings and recommendations from research and analysis in consultation with the industry, government, communities and other stakeholders.  This report, or Phase 1, will be filtered through an ‘experts’ industry panel including national leaders in Destination and Niche Development, Marketing and Research, Economics and Planning.  This panel will work with Yukoners to conclude Phase 1 in preparation for the final phase – the Business Plan.

Phase 2, the Yukon Tourism Industry Business Plan, will attempt to consider the Yukon tourism industry as though it were a corporation, assessing market values, product inventory and assets, regional, national and global competition and design a game plan to develop the Yukon’s tourism industry to its fullest potential.

With TIA Yukon as the Business Plan steward; working with our tourism partners in the associations, governments and communities, this final document will become TIA Yukon’s strategic focus for the future.  Get involved today.  Click on the link below to preview summary comments received to date, and stay tuned.
